Academic Calendar
Classes are offered in a 12-week semester format.
Course ClassificationINTRODUCTORY CLASSES: There are introductory classes in both obedience and agility. Entry level courses in obedience and agility are most likely to be the courses desired by the general public. These classes are usually the first classes in obedience and agility that you will take with your dog. Introductory agility classes follow a 12-week semester format. Introductory obedience classes are 8 weeks long, and the next class begins soon after the previous one ends, so they do not follow a semester format.
CORE COURSES: These courses offer advanced training in the different dog training disciplines offered by Oriole. They are usually offered in semester-long format. They include courses in:
SUMMER COURSES: Summer courses are a changing offering of courses that may be core courses or electives. Each starts in July. ELECTIVES: Electives are a changing offering of courses from any of the above categories, or spanning several, such as Obedience for Agility or Clicker Training. These courses are usually shorter in duration and more focused on developing particular skills, such as Weave Poles and Contact Drills or Attention. They are offered throughout the year on a limited basis and during the summer when there may be no core courses offered. PoliciesPriority: All courses are open to everyone, provided they meet the stated prerequisites and deadlines. First priority for placement into a class goes to Contributing Members, second priority to full members in good standing (Training, Non-training, Honorary and Lifetime), third priority to Provisional members, and remaining slots are open to the public. This means that the higher level courses are usually filled with members. See page 7 for an explanation of Membership in Oriole and to obtain membership applications. ODTC does not accept children under the age of 16 in our classes unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The parent or legal guardian must remain in the appropriate building where the class is being held throughout the entire class period. AGILITY EQUIPMENT USAGE: Unauthorized individuals may only use equipment when supervised by an agility instructor. Authorized individuals may train when the agility building is not in use by ODTC. Authorized individuals are the following, who all MUST have agility training: instructors, committee chairs and members, board members & officers. If you do a job for ODTC, you are a committee member. Please check the building calendar at www.orioledogclub.org for information on building availability. The Club reserves the right to cancel a class due to low registration. Equally, class size may be increased if the instructor and Training Director deem it appropriate. ODTC reserves the right to refuse registration to any customer. Registration and fees
Online Registration InformationContinuing with the Spring 2008 registration period, ODTC will be using on-line registration for all core classes. This means that participants will be able to register and pay electronically with no need to send in paper registrations. The system we are using is operated by the Count Me In Corporation (CMI), a company that has been providing on-line registration for various organizations for several years. The registration software and database is hosted on their servers. NOTE: If you do not wish to use on-line registration, or unable to, you may still send in a paper version of your registration during the appropriate registration period. What Has Changed? In order to accommodate priority registration for Contributing Members (CM) and Members (M) before Nonmembers (NM), registration this session will be staggered. Registration will open to contributing members first, then to both contributing members and members, and then to nonmembers (NM), CMs and Ms. CMs and Ms will be sent passwords to access the registration system at the appropriate time. That password lock will be removed for open season. If you are a member and do not receive your appropriate password by Feb. 23, please contact Jeff Bolognese (jbolo@k9trailblazers.org, 301-286-4252). Another change is that you will know immediately if the class you wish to register for is full or still has openings. This means that, upon completion of your registration, you will have confirmation that you are in the classes you registered for. For some classes you will also have the option of putting yourself on a “wait list” if the class is full. You will be notified if space opens up in that class and be able to register for it at that time. The final major change is that you will be able to pay for your classes via credit card. If you don’t wish to pay by credit card, you can still pay by check. If paying by check, your class spots will be held for you for 15 days. Your check must be received at the registrar's address no later than 15 days from the date of registering online, or your class reservation(s) will be cancelled and your place in those classes released. What Stayed the Same? In general, the overall registration process will remain the same. You will still have the option of sending in a paper registration. Though, if you do that, you won’t know whether or not you have gotten into the classes for which you are registering. There will still be priority registration for CMs and Ms. But in order to get priority for your membership level, you must register during the appropriate registration period. No matter when you register, you will still receive your appropriate CM or M discount on classes. Registration information will still be processed by our class registrars, though they will be using the on-line database for tracking registration information. If you send in a paper registration, the registrars will have to enter your data into the system themselves. In addition, at this time, registration for introductory obedience and introductory agility classes will still be handled via the paper registration system. If you wish to register for those classes, you will still need to fill out a paper registration and mail it to the appropriate registrar. More Detailed Information Detailed information on how to use the new registration system will be posted on the ODTC website at: http://www.orioledogclub.org/clasched.htm There you will find detailed instructions on how to use the system which will, hopefully, answer any questions or concerns that you may have. If you have additional questions, please contact Jeff Bolognese. The intent of implementing this new system is to make the registration process easier for both ODTC students and class registrars. We realize that there are some people who are not able to easily access the Internet and will not be able to use this new system. That’s why we are still retaining the paper registration system. For everyone else, please make every effort to use this new system so that we can fully evaluate it for the club.
Membership in ODTCHow do you become a member of Oriole? ODTC is an entirely volunteer organization, and we need volunteers to teach, help put on events, and help with running our two buildings. As an incentive to work for the club, we provide benefits such as lower class fees. The procedure for becoming a member and the benefits of membership are posted on our web site at http://www.orioledogclub.org/meminfo.htm.
